Connecting Your Laptop to an External Display & AV device.
If you have a meeting to attend or a presentation to perform, you may wish to connect your laptop to some external devices. This guide will help you connect your laptop to both external display and a external camera/microphone.
Overview
- Present your screen using a HDMI cable or wirelessly using Vivi
- Connect your laptop to the AV device (camera & microphone/speakers) using the usb cable coming from the device.
- After starting your Zoom or Teams presentation, ensure that the correct camera and microphone device are selected in either app.
Step 1 - Presenting your screen
-
First you must decide if you wish to connect to the display using an HDMI cable or wirelessly using Vivi. It is recommended for guests and visitors of Scotch College to connect to an external display using the wired method.
-
Wirelessly using Vivi
If the room has a Vivi unit installed, you may connect to the display wirelessly. Please see the guide linked here to connect to the display using Vivi.
-
Wired using HDMI
Locate the HDMI cable from the display you wish to connect to and plug the other end into your laptop. Mac users may need a special AV adaptor in order to connect an HDMI cable to their laptop.
**NOTE** In the Purruna Meeting Room, the HDMI cable is under a square black covering on one of the tables
- Change the input of the external display by clicking on the appropriate button (wired or wireless) on the wall panel. If your room has no wall panel, locate the remote control for the TV and press the 'source' button until your laptop is shown.

Step 2 - Connecting your Laptop to the AV device
Note - you only need to connect to the AV device if you're hosting or joining a online meeting.
- Locate the usb cable coming from the Camera mounted beneath the TV or display and plug this into your laptop. Please note that the cable in your room may look different to the one pictured below.
