Enabling Screen Time on your child's device
This article assumes that you and your child are already members of your own Apple Family. If you aren't, please return to this article after following the instructions linked here that show you how to enable Apple Family Sharing.
Please note that once your child turns 13 years old, they will be allowed to leave your Apple Family without your approval.
-
On a device that you're signed into your Apple ID on, navigate to Settings > Apple ID > Family Sharing.
-
Select the name of your child who you wish to enable Screen Time for, then select Screen Time > Continue.
- Here you will be presented with some options around limiting the type of access on your child's device. Moving the slider will pre-fill the type of content allowed on your child's device based on their age. In my example, even though the child is 16 years old, you can see that I've moved the slider to only allow content appropriate for age 12. You can customise your child's access in more detail by looking at the options below the slider. When you're ready to proceed, select Turn On Restrictions.
- Please read Apple's messages about Sensitive Photo and Video protection and Screen Distances and select Continue at each menu.
- Choose Turn On App & Website Activity when asked if you want to keep track of your child's screen time. Accept the default settings at the Set Time away from Screen menu and select Turn on Downtime. We'll adjust this in the next steps.
- Choose a screen time control lock code so that your child can't easily make adjustments to their screen-time settings. It is important to never tell your child this code otherwise they will be able to override any restrictions you've enabled via Screen Time.
- Return to your child's profile by navigating back to Settings > Family > "Your Child's name".
-
Select Screen-Time > Downtime and enter your control lock code.
- Select Customise Days and adjust the days and times to lock the device. You may wish to set a looser schedule on Friday's and Saturday's for example.
There are additional options for you to explore such as restricting the ability for your child to make purchases, setting up approvals for App store purchases or requesting that your child share their location data with you. For more information about these, please visit Apple's support page, linked here.
